There have been some alterations made to the interior, but in the main it has kept its essence which gives it a unique charm all of its own. The theatre has a seating capacity of 430; when required, this can be reduced to 180 seats to create an intimate atmosphere. The Canterbury Repertory Theatre Society (Inc.) is committed to staging five productions per year, filling all the key roles from its membership. It also rents out the premises at very reasonable rates to other groups and organizations. As a non-profit incorporated society Repertory is run by volunteers who love entertaining and being involved in a friendly environment. If you would like to become involved either actively or as a supporter please fill in the form at the Becoming a Member page. Beginnings In 1929, when the radiant health club wanted a place to meet in and Professor James Shelley wanted a Theatre for the people for the newly formed Repertory society Charles Luney was 23. 15 years ago, Charlie told me he wanted to get a bit bigger than a builder of houses so he looked around for a project to tender for. Frances Willis had created a design for the Radiant Health Club. Professor Shelley encouraged them to make their hall a Theatre as well, and Charlie got the contract. He told me in 1993, The building was to be brick with timber trusses and a lot of ornamental plaster work throughout, Frank Willis was fond of the twiddly bits. My plasterer Harry Sharman was talented; he made all the molds and cast the plaster detail on the ceiling. It was a great building to do at 23 years of age. I gained experience as I went along. The Radiant Health Club \'s 300 members hoped the new Radiant hall would become the home of true music, drama and modern thought. Professor Shelley headed English at Canterbury College and was founder of the University Drama Society, he designed the stage, fly tower, wings and dressing rooms. The interior of the hall was finished in old ivory embellishments in old gold and the curtain in tangerine and blue. From the start Repertory rented the hall that has been their home ever since. The first play performed there was Lilies of the Field in November 1929. For 20 years amateur theatre blossomed. The relationship between the club and its tenant was a good one. Then came an event that threatened to blow the society and the Theatre apart. Selling the Theatre, Almost We continue Penny Giddens’ recollections told to me for a story in The Press in January 1993. The attempt by the society to start a professional theatre had failed and Repertory ceased to have a professional director. Penny continues: “It was a reflection of the times that in the 1970s some society members put forward a plan to sell the Kilmore Street theatre. I had just returned from overseas and was struck dumb. I could not believe my ears. In the end we did not sell. It was a struggle, we owed money, but we got there under the inspired leadership of our new chairman, John Hendry.” Penny was appointed Artistic Director in 1983. At her first meeting she proposed significant changes to tune the theatre in to changing times. “It was clear at that time that fewer people were attending theatre, but those who did, wanted surroundings that were intimate and congenial.” She recommended dividing the theatre with a curtain, to create an intimate theatre at the front. She wanted to rake the rear seating and make more space between rows. The dress circle had already been removed to create upstairs rehearsal rooms, which should become a club with facilities for entertaining after first nights. The ideas were embraced by John Hendry, who was also resident architect. He designed the raked seating which transformed the theatre, creating excellent viewing even from the back. It was a point appreciated by major tenants such as St Josephs Light Operatic Society and Children’s Theatre. The post television era changed the theatre and the society, but the show went on. Yvette Bromley, Mervyn Thompson, Ray Hope, Harold Pointer, Wendy de la Bere, Neta Neale, and Ngaio Marsh, directed a wide variety of plays. In the mid 1980s Penny Giddens found herself fighting once again, to save the theatre she loved. A neighbouring firm offered to buy it and let the society use it for 20 years. The sum offered was large and some members thought it was a way of setting the society up financially and refurbishing the theatre. “At no stage was I drawn to the idea at all,” recalls Penny. “It was a terrible thing to be doing and I could see the dangers at once. Nothing is permanent when it comes to large companies, and the thing I feared happened. The neighbouring firm has gone.” At a special meeting at that time, the general membership rejected the idea of selling. It’s at the Very Heart of Me This is the final part of the The Press story from 1993, where Penny Giddens reflected on a Repertory past. At the end of the article she looked forward. She told me, “The West End of London is the theatre capital of the Western world and it does the sort of plays we do and people still go to see them. It’s our function to keep them fresh and alive, and provide an outlet for people who want to act, paint, design, direct, stage manage, and do props and wardrobe – all the things that go into it”. In 1990 Penny Giddens was awarded the Queen’s Service Medal for services to theatre in Canterbury. She was involved in Canterbury Opera and she directed for a range of organizations, but her first love was the Repertory Society and its Kilmore Street theatre. “I do love it – it’s at the very heart of me”, she said. “The fact that I’ve been here, and seen all these people through. We’ve done so many things together”. At that time, Rep had just mounted its 324th production, the comic musical Nunsense, directed by Penny Giddens. The Press named one of the actors, saying she gave the Best Performance of the Year. Penny said, “We have to increase Repertory’s position in the city, which is what we hope to do by giving the theatre a facelift shortly. Since the last major alterations we’ve spent a lot of money on lighting, settings and heating, but the time has come to give the theatre a 1990’s facelift.” It’s perhaps due to Penny’s vision for the theatre that we are now inspired to take things so much further and give our theatre a push in to the 21st Century. Penny went on to say at that time, “We must make people aware of what we have in this place. It is the only fully equipped small theatre in the city whose rental makes it viable for all kinds of groups and professional touring companies”. “Most people simply don’t realize what this theatre does, what it brings to all those people”, she went on to say. “If you see a dance recital, a Children’s Theatre play, a one-man show, a serious Rep drama, a big musical, a professional company, and see all the people involved, it’s fantastic.” “I stood in Kilmore Street only yesterday and looked back down, and there were all these square boxes and in the middle of it was the little gem that lightens your heart, and you think, “Gosh, isn’t it a joy to see that little thing sitting there?” Yes, Penny, it is. Thank you. Audience Comment - Journey \'s End The Press May 5 True to The Press review of Rozena Hallum \'s direction of Journey \'s End, it was one of the most powerful and cathartic plays — from the programme notes to the curtain call —that has been staged (April 26). I am sorry if you have missed seeing it. Long live our Christchurch Repertory Theatre. BARBARA MURRELL Diary of Anne Frank Reviews Anne \'s Diary Still Resonates - Voxy.co.nz The Christchurch Star - Review The Diary of Anne Frank, dramatised by Goodrich and Hackett, Directed for Repertory Theatre by Robert Gilbert, 6-14 March at 7.30pm, (Monday, Thursday 6pm,Sunday 2pm). Running time 2 hours thirty-five minutes. Reviewed by Lin Clark. Repertory, Robert Gilbert and his whole team can be very proud of this richly detailed production. It is no mean feat to recreate the famous wartime attic where the Frank family and their \'guests \' sheltered from the ruthless inhumanity of Hitler \'s Holocaust. The play is not only striking in its theatrical savvy, but keeps faith with the enduring and triumphant spirit of Anne herself so that there are many moments when we are reminded that happiness defies circumstances. So does human orneriness and wry humour abound as parents, teenagers and a pernickety old dentist struggle for \'peace’ in their refuge. An inspired cast shapes the material with great authority. They bring to riveting reality the attic world designed by excitingly talented Rebecca Jane Novick Goldstein, lit with flair by visiting designer Rob Falk, whose skill imbues even wordless sequences with dramatic intensity. Key roles – though all are significant – are filled with great sincerity and conviction by Rosanna Hewson as Anne and Brian Sullivan as her father Otto Frank. Congratulations Repertory. Thank you, Elayne and Simone. Rozena and Tony Hallum are making a lovely job of painting the dressing rooms. London - Roderick Lonsdale In spite of the plethora of musicals on, in the West End, London has a wealth of theatre to offer. The Donmar Theatre has taken up residence at Wyndham \'s near Leicester Square and has offered star-studded productions from Ivanov to Hamlet. It was surprising that Kenneth Branagh didn \'t receive an Olivier award for his eponymous role in this Chekhov classic. His was a riveting performance; a performance to cherish. This year \'s winner of Best Actor, Derek Jacobi followed with perhaps the defining Malvolio of his generation in, of course, Twelfth Night. The supporting cast were almost as good. The National offered Michael Morpurgo \'s War Horse for the second year, a stunning production with life-size puppets for the horses, wonderful sets and lighting. Stoppard \'s Every Good Boy Deserves Favour with its onstage symphony orchestra and set in a Soviet insane asylum was both hilarious and moving. Seats are hard to get for both The Pitman Painters and Burnt by the Sun which have both received rave reviews. Five stars have been consistently awarded to Anna Mackmin \'s revival of Brian Friel \'s Dancing at Lughnasa which was lyrical and full of exuberant melancholy, and luckily for me on the Year 13 English course. The Royal Shakespeare put on a short season of Othello at the Hackney Empire which used some ingenious movement to suggest changes of scene but perhaps didn \'t quite convince with the lead actor whose accent varied from North African to Caribbean to South London. This rather superficial review only scratches the surface of the West End while deep in the East End, Arcola Theatre puts on forgotten repertoire and cutting edge plays in the round for only £15. The Royal Court in Sloane Square provides a venue for new writing and the Guildhall Drama School in the Barbican area also provides stimulating performances of less commercial plays. Roderick Lonsdale: Roderick was in Wendy de la Bere’s production of Six Characters in Search of an Author with Colin Alexander. Roderick now teaches at Chigwell School, North East London. Our Man in London, Colin Alexander Where have all the ‘New Wave’ plays Gone? ‘A play, a play, my kingdom for a play’. I can almost hear William Shakespeare cry out about the state of the British theatre today; and as for George Bernard Shaw, his rumblings would shake the theatres to their foundations. Every era has brought forth a new wave of plays. But what has happened since the last era, which brought a revolutionary change to British Theatre from 1956? John Osborne, David Hare, Arnold Wesker and the era of Harold Pinter. His recent departure from this earth makes us ask, “where now?” The plays that explore and stimulate with their use of the English language – compelling themes – social comments. Plays which produce good actors, whose task it is to fill the roles. Characters that fill the theatre and can be heard in the back rows and upper circles without aid of a microphone. So where have all the plays gone in recent decades? Anyone glancing through a list of the forty plus theatres in London may well ask this question. The Globe seems to have temporarily lost its way, the National Theatre rarely lives up to its name. The Donmar – expanding to a larger theatre in the Westend, draws top actors in quality revivals, actors who are crying out for a new period of dramatic writing: but making movies or TV dramas while waiting. Once London stimulated with great plays – great actors, so many it was nearly impossible to see them all. Today it is like looking for a needle in a haystack, to find that elusive new play, one that passes the test. The Westend is overflowing with long and short running musicals (old and new which rarely return the costs of production) pop or movie based. Seems the promoters grab at anything which was popular in another medium: Billy Elliot (a big success), Dirty Dancing , Jailhouse Rock , Wicked (OZ) , Spamalot , Phantom and now Phantom 2 – Love never Dies. Plays are often written with a particular actor in mind, i.e. Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, but are rarely seen after that. Which brings one to conclude that there is little money in spending time writing plays for the stage. One only has to look at the credits of TV dramas and films to see that this is so. Alan Bennett, David Hare, Simon Gray and others of repute and skill with language, are in demand to write ‘The screenplay’ and without a doubt this pays well. We are indeed fortunate then, when that rare play comes our way which is a contemporary piece of writing. ‘The History Boys’ has filled theatres round the world. ‘Doubt’ and ‘Frost vs Nixon’ had quiet showings, but reached the world in the cinema – adapted for the screen – and thrilled us with their use of the English language, bringing out great performances from the casts. So what does the theatre hold for the play and the actor? I wish I had a crystal ball and no doubt you do too. We can but lament the loss and continue to wait. In the meantime, Willie and George, rest peacefully, if possible. Blasts From the Past I decided to look through my memory drawer recently and found so many reminders of lovely times acting in Rep plays and seeing others perform. There were photos of my daughter, Juliet, as Beth from Little Women , Bella, the town tart from Same Old Moon , Louisa in The Sound of Music , the girl from The Music Man , Rizzo from Grease and of course Scout from Elizabeth Moody’s production in 1990 of To Kill a Mockingbird . I remember my husband trying to stifle sobs as Beth gave her dying speech, the pride, as we watched the 11 year old Scout go off to rehearsals with her clip board and pencil. Elizabeth said, “I knew she’d be fine when I saw her arrive with her clip board”. Juliet’s first time in the theatre was when, at the age of three, she came to see me in Round and Round the Garden and I heard a little voice saying, “that’s my Mummy up there”. I still have the card she made me with Sarah on it and the one she made with a picture of Julia on it. That’s when I was in A Month of Sundays . Colin Alexander was my husband and Bill Cook was my Dad. Penny directed. And then I found the packet that contained the Dracula fangs from when I was in The Passion of Dracula . I was Helga. A birthday card from a friend, saying, “I had a task to find a card with so many “bad habits” reminded me of the fun I had in Nunsense. But it was a sad time too. My Mother was dying. Another card, covered with busy little pigs in varying attitudes of domesticity reminded me of my role as Minimus in Animal Farm . I became a dab hand at somersaulting across the stage. “Perhaps I could stage a comeback”, I thought. There are numerous cards from Edna Neville, Penny Giddens and Sister Leonie wishing me wonderful First Nights and saying lovely things designed to give a girl a boost. A card from Dawn Somerville says,” Mille Grazie, Maria” and I remember one of the last rehearsals before Lend Me a Tenor opened. I thought I had been magnificent, but she told me to get control of my character. I was affronted, but she was right. I had forgotten Stanislavski’s maxim to keep a fraction of yourself as observer. That was my last play for Rep, so I haven’t had a chance to remedy that. So many plays, fading programmes with flowers from First Night bouquets pressed between the pages. I found little cards I’d written for First Night suppers with the names of specialty foods on. I remember visiting the Jewish Society and getting their menu advice for The Diary of Anne Frank supper. And what about the doll cake I made for Summer of the Seventh Doll . So many memories. Tell us yours. We’d love to hear them. Stop Press A Baby for Sarah and John and family The stork has been hovering over Repertory recently. Sarah Bohan and John Ashton now have a baby girl to add to their family. Sarah gave birth to her seven weeks ago. Sarah and John met at Rep when they were rehearsing in Jane Eyre . John was Rochester and Sarah was--- no, not Jane - the maid. Both of them have gone on to perform many important roles for us. Their new daughter’s name is Vanessa Bridie Alice. They are all doing very well. Perhaps one day we’ll see Vanessa’s name on a cast list too. Privates on Parade Robert Gilbert is taking excerpts from Privates on Parade to the New Zealand Theatre Federation Play Festival. We wish them all the best. Those who saw the play, will know that they take an excellent product. Architecture Students Today, (Thursday 23rd April) I was in talking to David at Repertory and he told me that he was just about to get a visit from some 2nd year architecture students from the Design and Art College. He’d arranged for Gavin Willis to come in and talk to them about Repertory’s beginnings and Repertory Restage. How exciting for us to be able to contribute to architectural students’ knowledge in this town. Of course Gavin is the ideal man for the job. Most of you will know that he is the Restage architect and his father, Frank Willis, was the architect responsible for the Repertory Theatre. Cultural Events And we’ve gone international! Recently, Canterbury Business Associates have staged an African and a Korean event in our theatre. Memoriam Elizabeth Moody It was with profound sadness that we learnt of the death of Elizabeth on the 11th January this year. We extend our deepest sympathy to Terrence and her family. During the funeral we could all feel her presence amongst us, as we celebrated her life. A number of her colleagues spoke with wit and love about the unique person who was Elizabeth. They spoke of her ability to shock, her intelligence, her verbal luminosity, her unequivocal honesty, her skill as an actor and director, and her vulnerability. It is not often that we are sent people such as Elizabeth, who truly leave their strongly indented and individual footstep on this planet. We are the richer for knowing her. Thank you, Elizabeth. Repertory sent flowers. Rozena Hallum said that Elizabeth would like flamboyant, so I chose a riotous bunch of white lilies, bright orange roses, orange Leukospernum, blue feathery things and purple-blue Gentians. In the message we sent, Rozena spoke of Elizabeth being a lodestar for Repertory. I asked Brenda Hayes to write a story for the Reporter . Here it is. Elizabeth. Where do you start? We worked on twenty four plays together over the years, moving from dumbstruck awe [I \'m working with ELIZABETH MOODY!] to a relationship that didn \'t need much explanation. The words You \'ll know what I want were often my entire brief for the sound scapes used. Finding just the right present for her, in relation to the play, turned into a game as she tried to outguess me. Outwitting her was rewarded with a delightful glint in her eye and visiting her house to see all the reminders of Rep plays proudly displayed, was a joy. She loved to direct, teach and banter with her cast. There was usually one member chosen for extra focus and many members will remember the Shut up, Roger that frequently peppered rehearsals even when Roger was silent. Her ability to remember the entire play kept the prompt focused as she would often give the line without reference to the script. Her most remembered prompt came when she walked from the auditorium, through the kitchen, up the stairs to backstage and still gave the correct prompt to an actor who had just dried. She knew well the rhythm of the piece. One of her most mentioned Rep moments was the opening night of the first play she directed here. Up went the curtain and the couch was missing. She was unable to stay in the theatre. Luckily the night was saved by Stuart Thomson who rearranged the remaining chairs. There was seldom an opening night that the pass door didn \'t burst open during performance and Elizabeth came back with a word or thought that couldn \'t wait until interval. She was a wonderful director/teacher of comedy, but I will remember best her dramas. The pathos of Arthur Chapman in You Never Can Tell , the aloneness of Vanessa Wells in A Doll \'s House , the gut wrenching sadness of John Willoughby and Roger Scott-Linfield in All My Sons and the scariness of Adrian Mc Namara and Brian Sullivan and despair of David Allen in The Birthday Party . What amazing memories she helped to create. But especially I must mention Social Climbers , her last production in 2009. Were we not all blessed who were involved in that production? After seeing Elizabeth so sick, to see the strength of personality that took her on that journey with us. It was a moment in time that felt special then, but on reflection we can all say, Wow what a curtain. What a lady. There have been 2 deaths of note to the theatre community recently. Today in the paper I read that Kevin Tetley had passed away. Kevin was in A View from a Bridge , Come Back Little Sheba , Dreams of a Summerhouse and Up ‘n Under, as I remember. Kevin had a strong physical presence on stage and was a wonderful back actor, able to express a wide range of emotions through his body whilst facing upstage. Peggy Grant died in December. Although mostly known for her involvement in Children \'s Theatre and the early days of The Court theatre, Peggy was also involved with several plays at Repertory, the last being wardrobe mistress for The Merry Wives of Windsor . It is from such people as Peggy and Elizabeth Moody that I have drawn my lifelong interest in theatre. I remember sitting on the floor at Rep laboriously cutting out green leaves to put on some wire netting to make a Christmas wreath. Peggy walked up, picked up the uncut paper, screwed it up, pushed it into the holes in the wire, and in less than a minute, there was a beautiful three dimensional wreath, full of life, instead of the flat, lifeless one I had been working on for ages. A valuable lesson I still bring to mind. Lyall Hallum As you know Rozena Hallum is our Creative Director at Repertory. It was with great sadness that we learnt of the death of Rozena’s husband, Lyall. Lyall was not only a great support to Rozena in her work in the theatre, but he did much for our society over the years. Lyall was an artist, teacher, craftsman and builder and he created many superb theatre sets. Many of you will remember his innovative sets for The Shadow Box, The Visit , and Twelve Angry Men . He also produced posters, posters that had the ability to capture the essence of a play. Our love and support is with Rozena and her family as they learn to live without Lyall. Rozena continues to inspire with the passion and commitment she gives our society. Jim Taylor We were very sad to hear about the death of one of our valued members, Jim Taylor. Jim and his wife Marette have been coming to our plays together since the early 1970’s. But Marette used to come with her Grandmother, as a teenager, in the era of the fur coats. Jim and Marette are good friends of Penny Giddens. They used to sit up the front, because Marette said they were both a little deaf. Jim supported Marette’s great fascination with the theatre and learned to love it himself. The last play they saw together was 84 Charing Cross Road , which they adored. Marette is excited by the fact that the love of theatre which Rep has nurtured, is continued in her family and a number of new family members are joining up with Repertory today. And that is a fitting tribute for Jim. Mary Robertson It is with sad regret all at Repertory note the passing of Mary Robertson who always had a very active interest in the Theatre as well as cats and her garden. Doug Clarke of Riccarton Players supplied the brief notes about Mary and Stewart Mary & Stewart Robertson were both members of Elmwood Players in the good old Garage Days at 69 St Albans Street. They progressed and assisted with the creation of the Elmwood Playhouse, that was. Latterly Mary worked tirelessly for Canterbury Repertory Theatre, organising FOH, as well as maintaining a high profile with the Cats Protection League, maintaining her rambling garden which was full of surprises, and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by daughters, Lee, Ruth and Lynne, and of course son, Grant, who is co-owner of The Light Site. Another dedicated theatre person has passed on - now Mary can join her beloved Stewart creating a new theatre in the hereafter Penny Giddens Penny Giddens our long serving Artistic Director has retired and a special afternoon to farewell Penny was held at the theatre. About Penny Penny joined Repertory over 50 years ago and has been a driving force and amazing talent throughout. It is a pleasure to present this insight into a person who has lived life to the full. Penny was born in Southern Rhodesia but is very English!! Her younger life was mostly in England. She was educated at a prep. School In Surrey then went to boarding school. War Adventures She took herself out of school at 16 and a half, immediately added a year to her age and enlisted in the W.R.N.S. She trained as a wireless telegraphist in Edinburgh then served in the W.T.room at Admiralty before being posted to Gibraltar for 2 years. She served during that period on board ship and in Ceylon for a short time then it was back to Gibraltar. During this time her vessel was torpedoed on the way to Gibraltar, sank and the crew were picked up by a destroyer. She returned to Admiralty for a short while before being de-mobbed. How Penny came to NZ She spent time in Surrey but had itchy-feet so decided to take off back to Rhodesia but stopped off In Wellington NZ to have a look before intending to continue to Rhodesia. However, she met Peter Giddens and has spent the rest of her life in NZ - in Wellington for a while before coming to Christchurch where Peter lectured at the University of Canterbury and the relationship was becoming serious! Love and Marriage Peter and Penny married in Lower Hutt and lived in Christchurch in a bach they built over a weekend or two. They lived in this while they built their own house - yes, every bit of it and after about 18 months they moved in as the birth of their daughter Victoria was imminent. Introduction to Theatre Her introduction to theatre life was in London as an audience member and her interest in theatre was developed with the Anthony Quayle Company in Gibraltar. She played the Virgin Mary in a nativity play in Gibraltar. This was a professional engagement with Dickie Blyth and Phillipa Sparrow of the Shakespeare Company. Penny and Repertory Penny joined the Repertory Society in the early 50 \'s and has worked with our company ever since, eventually, after acting and backstage work, became Stage Director. Many highlights of course, but in particular was appointed Stage Director to the first Christchurch Arts Festival when Repertory staged the York Cycle of Mystery plays. After directing many plays for Repertory she subsequently became the Artistic Director. Service for Theatre and Canterbury Opera In the mid 70 \'s Penny was invited to become the Shopping Reporter at 3ZB and spent some years broadcasting in that programme and the women \'s hour. In 1980 she was awarded the OSM for service to theatre and to Canterbury Opera (where she was a foundation member) and for her work on the schools \' programme. She eventually directed some 30 musicals for Repertory and other companies, many Children \'s Theatre plays, as well as many productions for Repertory starting with The Boyfriend. Peter Giddens It is with regret we note the recent death of Penny \'s dearly loved husband Peter. Peter, a true gentleman, was much loved and respected by all who knew him. © Copyright Canterbury Repertory Society Incorporated 2010 ",39);arrFiles[10]=new Array(11,"Theatre_Plan.html","10 Dec 2009","Christchurch Repertory ","Amateur Theatre, stage, Christchurch, Repertory, Make Up","The home page for the website of Christchurch Repertory","",1);arrFiles[11]=new Array(12,"past_10_1.html","3 May 2010","Christchurch Repertory ","Amateur Theatre, stage, Christchurch, Repertory, Make Up","The home page for the website of Christchurch Repertory","Home | Booking on Line | Contact Us | Become a Member | Past Productions | Support Us | Green Room | About Theatre Hire the Theatre Productions 2010 Journey \'s End The Diary of Anne Frank 2009 The Secret Garden To Kill a Mockingbird Social Climbers Musical Extravaganza! THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett. On Stage 6th to 14th March 2010 Repertory Theatre, Kilmore Street, Christchurch. Repertory is proud to be presenting this iconic Pulitzer Prize-winning play lovingly adapted from the famous diary, to be directed by Robert Gilbert and designed by Rebecca Jane Novick Goldstein. With astonishing wit and determination the young Anne Frank records and confronts her rapidly changing life in hiding with her family in Nazi occupied Holland during the Second World War. Her smiling spirit is always on the move and continues to touch the conscience of the world. Rehearsal Notes: Rachel Walsh who plays Miep Gies in The Diary of Anne Frank tells us that it seemed as though the spirit of Miep miraculously touched the performers at the first rehearsal of the play. Miep Gies had just died at the age of 100. Miep was the woman who so courageously helped the Franks to stay in hiding. She gathered up Anne’s scattered diary pages after the Frank family was arrested and sent to concentration camps. She said she never read them. She respected the teenager’s privacy. Also, if she had read them, she may have had to burn them because they possibly would have incriminated those who helped the Franks. Although Miep never wanted to be known as a hero she was one. She gave the diary to Otto Frank after the war and of course, the rest is history. Without Miep Gies we would not have known Anne’s story. Rosanna Hewson who plays Anne is very excited. She says that Anne is her heroine. “I think of the miracle of Anne’s story coming to light for us to share”. And then there’s the Anne Frank Travelling Exhibition which will be at Te Papa at the same time as Repertory’s play is running. The exhibition will come to Christchurch in 2011. It introduces visitors to the events leading up to World War 2 and the government directed killing of Jews, Gypsies, the disabled, Slavs and others. The exhibit depicts individuals who chose to join the Nazi party and become perpetrators, those who were bystanders as well as those who were willing to resist the Nazi tyranny. The main focus though, is anti-Semitism and of course the Frank family and the other occupants of the Secret Annexe. The Diary of Anne Frank at Repertory is a story of hope. “I keep my ideals because in spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart”, said Anne. Her smiling spirit is always on the move and continues to touch the conscience of the world. Cast: Director, Robert Gilbert has selected a strong ensemble of dedicated actors, they are... JOURNEY \'S END by R C Sherriff Performance Season: April 24 - May 2 (With a special matinee on ANZAC DAY April 25) Director Rozena Hallum Designer Peter Noonan The Play : Journey \'s End : grippingly portrays four days in the lives of a small group of soldiers in the trenches of WW1 in 1918. Set in a realistically detailed officer \'s dugout, the men do not know these are their last four days. They get on with doing their duty to King and Country as best they can - with courage, camaraderie, whisky, stiff-upper-lip, ironic humour - even races with earwigs! Outside the guns pound away, mortar shells smack the ground, the verey lights rise and fall, and there are eerie silences. We (the audience) know the end but it is the journey towards it that gives this play its dramatic punch and is so moving in its humanity. We are held in the moment. The first half is largely a waiting game, full of tension, bad jokes, and strained conversation as the German Offensive comes closer, but we get to know the characters intimately. After the interval when all hell breaks loose, we really care about the characters \' fate. Christchurch Press Review By Frances Hodgson Burnett Adapted For The Stage By Neil Duffield Directed by... Elayne Buckler Designer... Rebecca Goldstein This adaptation of the much -loved classic novel tells an inspiring story of transformation. As the change from winter to spring brings the garden to life, persuading it to release its secrets, so the characters of Mary and Colin and finally Mr Craven, begin to bloom. Mary learns to talk to birds, to skip and laugh, to experience the joy of watching things grow. Colin discovers the feel of a new-born lamb, the touch of a bird \'s feather, and the strength of his own under-used limbs. Mr Craven learns to release his locked-in grief and open himself once more to the warmth of human contact. The gardeners of the story – Martha, Dickon and old Ben – provide the key which unlocks the tightly-shut door inside Mary and motivates her, in turn, to bring Colin and his father out of their darkness and into the light. October 17 to 25. Reviewed by Alan Scott. It was almost a full house for the opening of Repertory \'s new play, A Secret Garden. It is a large theatre so all credit to the company for still being able to pack them in after years of presenting plays in Kilmore St. Once the audience was in, Repertory delivered a theatrical experience in fine style. Its presentation of Frances Hodgson Burnett \'s classic children \'s story enthralled the audience. Even this seen-it-all-before reviewer found it delightful. The play, of course, depends on, somehow, bringing into view a secret garden and designer Rebecca Jane Novick Goldstein \'s concept for this is first rate. Given the limited finances, it was a small miracle it was accomplished with such flair. More importantly, it enabled the audience to believe in the truth of the play. The design, though, was only the half of it. What also made the production real was the ambience of rural Yorkshire which permeated the play. Director Elayne Buckler helped her cast reproduce both Yorkshire accents and speech rhythms so successfully that you never once doubt where you are. On top of that, the three young actors on which the play depends were excellent. Grace Palmer as Mary, John Gordon as Dickon and Matthew Bonniface as Colin were very accomplished. The adult members of the cast also did fine work. There was not a weak link among them. This is a very good family show, where adults and children alike can enjoy themselves. Christopher Sergel \'s superb adaptation of Harper Lee \'s much loved novel, seen through the eyes of a resourceful young girl, peels back the layers of middle America to reveal bigotry, racism, hatred and fear. At the same time, it reveals humanity, courage, dignity and justice personified in one man, Atticus Finch. Against all odds he undertakes to defend the black man who stands accused. As the central drama unfolds, another gentler story develops : that of the children and Boo Radley. This is a play of depth and complexity with excellent character roles. It is not hard to see why. Its combination of an evocative coming of age story and an unapologetic indictment of Southern racism make it a rare bird indeed. Its remembrance of things past is suffused with a moral intensity that makes the story doubly compelling. As a play, it is less successful. Although the directors used slides at the beginning and the end, which took us from slavery to Barack Obama, the rather heavy-handed adaptation by Christopher Sergel gave the whole thing a somewhat dated feel theatrically. Somewhere, too, I felt the children \'s story gets lost to a degree. The Repertory production opens strongly. The lighting and set were first rate. They really captured the feel and atmosphere of a rural Alabama town in 1935. Zara Cormack as Jean Louise, who narrates the piece and plays Scout, has an engaging presence which immediately draws the audience in and her excellent Southern accent establishes just where we are. The other children, too, make very good work of their roles. The adults were a more uneven bunch and at times the play lost momentum. The trial scene, which takes up a large part of the play, never really generated the required tension and truthfulness, although Ballantyne Haynes, as Mayella, and Sam Carthy, as Tom Robinson, worked hard to produce the necessary emotional reality. The production is enjoyable nonetheless. It is a competent rendering of a great story. Reviewed by Alan Scott . Running time two and a quarter hours with interval. Reviewed by Gus Eliot. A little piece of hard times 1935 Alabama has come to compelling stage life in a theatre which predates it by half a decade, translating Lee \'s enthralling classic into a punchy tale for our times. For this class production frames its pleas for social justice in terms we recognise and respond to, without losing for a moment the poignancy and humour brought to the action by the three wonderfully convincing youngsters whose world is shaped so dramatically by events. It is a richly textured world where all the power of the law cannot guarantee justice to an innocent black man who has shown simple kindness to a viciously impoverished white family. The young people learn a lot that summer about the best and worst of the adult world they must inherit. Totally engaging characters guarantee that we share the experience. Andrew Bell as Atticus Finch, counsel for the defence, Sam Carthy as the accused man, Tom Robinson, and Zara Cormack as the feisty young Jean Louise (Scout) Finch head a simply outstanding cast. Torrential rains and a washed out bridge traps them in a hut together for three days. Two days in everything \'s chummy - sort of like high school camp. Three days in, they \'re definitely not happy campers. Will the rain ever stop? Will the resident hut ghost get them in the middle of the night? Will they all get simultaneous PMT and scratch each others eyes out? Or will they find out what true friendship really means? An insightful situation comedy about truth, consequences and unexpected revelation. Director \'s Notes: Somebody said Let \'s go climbing this weekend and you find yourself stuck in a very basic hut in the mountains with five female school-teachers and a wildly annoying young single mother. The bulk of Roger Hall \'s comedy stems from the nature of the beast and this is no exception - the comedy in this case stems from each character \'s reaction to the ghastly situation and the desire to tell-all as claustrophobia sets in. The usual WONDERFUL one-liners (and two and three liners) pack into this very funny AND interesting play. Liz Moody Social Climbers will be very appealing to all audiences and particularly to men! Social Climbers -A Glorious Romp Social Climbers by Roger Hall, directed for Repertory Theatre by Elizabeth Moody, June 6-14. Running time 2 hours 10 minutes with interval. Reviewed by Gus Eliot. Kiwi trampers are well used to heavy going, but this outfit was a glorious romp from start to finish. A decade after we chortled over this wickedly funny play, the six assorted women characters seem even more watchable and their lines have lost none of their spark, nor indeed the underlying insights into what makes them/us tick and a wealth of digs at various social issues - notably education since four of the women are from one school staffroom. Veteran thespian Elizabeth Moody, knows very well how to warm up an audience and give them a tramping escape without all the miseries of actually getting there. Much more fun to sit back in a cosy theatre and relish the stage version, set in a wonderfully realistic hut (design by Brenda Hayes) with a vastly entertaining set of characters dealing with enforced togetherness (a bridge is down). All six build strong roles from the situation, shaping events and altercations with polished ease. As they link arms for a practice river crossing at the end, the audience is left wanting more - sure pointer to a thoroughly successful production. The Star/Ashburton Guardian. The Oxford Companion to NZ Literature says, “while Hall’s plays are funny, their comedy is that of sorrowful resilience, like Chekhov’s, and of serious social criticism”. It’s interesting that Hall ‘gets us’ so well, because he is an import from the UK. He came here as a young man in 1958. He says that his desire to write and act was ignited by his father’s talent as an impersonator, frequent family visits to the theatre and his love for post-war radio comedies, such as Hancock’s Half Hour. It’s an inspirational story told with compassion, passion and at times humour. Annie Sullivan, a young woman, who has gone from blindness to partial sight, is the worker of miracles. Helen Keller is the almost feral young girl suffering from blindness and deafness, the recipient of the miracles. The play is set during the 1880’s in Alabama. The title originates from Mark Twain’s description of Sullivan as a miracle worker. Twain admired both Sullivan and Keller enormously and even helped arrange funding for Keller’s Radcliffe College education. The play is based on Helen Keller’s autobiography, The Story of my Life . Gibson also used a printed volume of Sullivan’s letters written during the time of her early stay with the Kellers. The first realization of William Gibson’s play was the 1957 Playhouse 90 broadcast. Gibson adapted his teleplay for a 1959 Broadway production with Anne Bancroft as Annie and Patty Duke as Keller. The same cast was used in the 1962 film. The Miracle Worker was remade for TV in 1979, this time, ironically, with Patty Duke as Annie Sullivan. There was a further TV production in 2000. Signers at performances What point is there, in having a play about someone who is deaf, if deaf people can’t attend? Therefore Repertory has taken an innovative approach and they will have signers at several performances, so if you have hearing problems be sure to check which nights the signers will be there. . Annie Sullivan wrote that the soul is not the body, and it is that part of us which thinks and loves and hopes…(and) is invisible… Helen replied, “But if I write what my soul thinks then it will be visible and the words will be my body” The Miracle Worker had truly wrought her miracle. Season Now Closed! By Paul Allen from the film script by Mark Herman Performance dates March 5 - 16 A bittersweet comedy to beat the band! Already an extremely popular and multi-award-winning film starring Pete Postlethwaite and Ewan McGregor, Christchurch theatregoers will be treated to the much-praised stage version of BRASSED OFF adapted by Paul Allen. In its debut run at the Sheffield Crucible, BRASSED OFF was riotously praised for its “sheer emotional power” and its defiant celebration of community spirit and working-class pride. Its 1994, a time of uncertainty for the miners of Grimley - their pit is under threat and the colliery band is on the verge of breaking up. “Can’t have a colliery band wi’out a colliery, can you?’” says veteran miner, Harry. They’re ready to pack it in, but then Gloria Mullins (played by Naomi Ferguson) comes along, rekindling enthusiasm, passion and romance in this fast-paced, bitter-sweet comedy to beat the band. If you loved the film you \'ll find the show is even better! Directed by Robert Gilbert Robert Gilbert directs what is a brilliantly funny and incredibly moving story of a desperate community fighting for its future. Shane Foster , who appeared in the original film of BRASSED OF F, leads Canterbury Brass live on stage for the Christchurch production. Brass band fans, lovers of stirring, powerful theatre and anyone who values heart, spirit and laughter will not want to miss this stunning show. More... Grimley may be the invention of Mark Herman but it is the mirror image of scores of small real-life towns in the North of England, South Wales and Southern Scotland. The story of Brassed Off is firmly rooted in reality. For hundreds of years, Britain’s industrial revolution was fed by the vast northern coalfield. Thousands of independently owned communities grew up around the mines. After the Second World War, British Coal prospered as a domestic market. With the onset of the pit-closure programme many mines (pits), still with vast reserves of coal, were shut down almost overnight. Families were divided and communties deprived of their livelihood. Towns like Brassed Off’s Grimley found themselves without the core industry that had sustained them for so long. The Ballantyne \'s Christmas Season of... Roger Hall \'s Cinderella! Fun for all the Family! This is an updated musical panto in the \'make \'em laugh \' tradition. Directed By Dimitri Gibara Performance DATES are November 24 - December 8. The Original Story Cinderella was a traditional old French fairy tale. After being translated into English, the characters have changed a lot down the years. New ones were added for the pantomime such as the Baron, Cinderella \'s father, who is always short of money; Buttons, who loves Cinders and is always trying to cheer her up and Dandini, Prince Charming \'s valet. Now one of the most popular pantos, it tells a story of the motherless Cinderella who has to do all the hard work in the kitchen while her ugly stepsisters enjoy themselves. An invitation arrives for the Baron \'s family to attend the Prince \'s Ball. The Ugly Sisters are very excited for the Prince is to choose his bride from the ladies who are present at the Ball but they refuse to let Cinders go with them. After they have left for the palace, Cinders is weeping by the fireside in her ragged dress, when her Fairy Godmother appears saying, \'Cinderella, you shall go to the ball! \' Waving her magic wand she changes a pumpkin into a golden coach pulled by six white horses, and Cinderella \'s rags become a beautiful ball gown. But her Fairy Godmother warns: \'You must leave the Ball before midnight! \' Cinderella is not recognised by her stepsisters and the Prince dances with her all evening. It is only as the clock starts to strike twelve that she remembers her Fairy Godmother \'s warning. She flees from the ballroom but the magic coach has vanished and her gown has turned to rags. Running after her, the Prince finds only a glass slipper on the palace steps. The next day the Prince sends out a proclamation that he will marry the lady whose foot the glass slipper fits. The Ugly Sisters try it on, but their feet are too big. Then Cinderella appears, tries on the slipper and it fits perfectly. Adapted by Ian Mullins Season Now Closed! Performance Dates Were Saturday, July 14 (Bastille Day!) - Tuesday, July 24. One of the greatest stories ever told, this adaptation for stage is thrilling, moving and fast paced. Director Anna McPhail comes to us from the Court theatre where one of her favourite experiences was playing multiple roles in the hugely successful \'Great Expectations \'. The timing is right for another Dickens! Here \'s to “the best of times-------- -” The setting is 1775 to 1792 - England and France – the terrifying background of the French Revolution. The storming of the Bastille, the trundling death carts with their doomed human cargo, the chillingly merciless guillotine - this is the frenzied Paris in revolt that Charles Dickens vividly captures in his famous work A Tale of Two Cities. With passionate eloquence, he brings to life a time of terror and treason, for when the starving French masses rise to overthrow a corrupt and decadent regime, both the guilty and the innocent fall victim to their rage. A masterful portrait of idealism, love and supreme sacrifice-in a Paris alive with revolutionary zeal and a London watching with nervous anticipation, Dickens humanises the story of the French Revolution with four of his greatest characters: the sinister Madame Defarge, the lovely Lucie Manette and her honorable husband Charles Darnay, and the complex, ultimately heroic Sydney Carton.
