This is a brilliant, bitter-sweet, true-life story, based on the 20 year correspondence between a struggling New York writer, Helene Hanff, and a London ‘antiquarian’ book dealer, Frank Doel.
Over the years,a long-distance friendship evolves, not only between these two, but between Helene Hanff and other staff members. Christmas packages and birthday greetings follow, with food parcels especially welcome in post-World War II London.
Lively discussions on topics as diverse as the sermons of John Donne, how to make Yorkshire pudding, the Brooklyn Dodgers and the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II make for a funny and moving script.
